Don't let your keyboard cast your lips silent..

All day long I listen to people talk. Just endless streams of words. A list of vocabulary strung together that all serves a purpose. Communication.

However, today's society has brought us into an entirely different way of communicating. We've gone from speaking out loud to saying everything via text or through the web. It's almost like we're not really talking anymore. We've become complacent. Having access to a cell phone and internet means that we really don't have to see each other or even really speak to each other anymore.

“The single biggest problem with communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” -George Bernard Shaw

I'm not sure when this all happened. It's been a slow development for years, which I always swore I'd never get absorbed in, but let's face it-we're all in.
It's so easy to put people off and just send them a quick text or catch them on facebook late at night. We don't even have to try to talk anymore. Just a few funny quips here and there. Sometimes it's easier to say how you feel to a blank screen rather than to an expressive face. I get it.
But when did we let typing on a keyboard replace using actual words.

If you've ever read any British literature, you know how sweet the English language can be. There were so many delectable and heart warming ways to say the simplest things. Just once I want someone to take the time to really say things to me. Like a long handed letter written just to say hello or a poem about their day.

Now we all abbreviate everything and use so much slang, it's hard to gauge exactly what people are saying. It's impossible to take things at face value because it all comes off as lazy and at times very negative.

I hate waiting around on people to say things to me. Just say it. Don't text it. Don't type it. Say it. Say it all. Spell every inch of it out as if you were telling the greatest story the world has ever known.

Let your lips caress each syllable, let your mouth project all your thoughts. Don't be afraid to ramble. Be opinionated. Be resilient. Technology has cast us all silent, giving us false courage to type what we can't say out loud.

I fear what our world will look like in 10 years. We've already conformed to the idea that all of our entertainment, friends, family, and relationships can be managed online.

I believe it was Charles Dickens who said that "Every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.” How can we truly know someone without looking into their eyes and feeling their words as they speak? We need true communication to get to know someone.

Do not fear the words you speak. Instead, be brave. Be bold. Be profound. Be unapologetically, you.

Speak now and forever, always. Do not let the keyboard do it all for you. Remember where your words began.
